"Gary Oldman carries off a tremendous performance here, and it’s impossible not to enjoy it."
★★★★
- Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

"The performance is a marvel, not merely leaping over what could have been a stunt, but deepening into a soulful portrayal of wartime leadership, tinged with ego, doubt and the demands of a terrible moment."
★★★★
- Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out

"Churchill’s darkest hour is Gary Oldman’s finest. Gripping, touching, amusing and enlightening, his performance is the prime reason this film must be seen — but not the only one."
★★★★
- Dan Jolin, Empire

"Gary Oldman’s Churchill will galvanise the nation."
★★★★
- Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph

"It’s an amazing performance: the only star turn I’ve seen in which a famous actor visible in nearly every scene would be unrecognisable if we didn’t know his name already."
★★★★
- Nigel Andrews, Financial Times

"This isn’t an uncritical celebration of British bulldog spirit but a nuanced portrait of Churchill at a key point early in the war."
★★★★
- Geoffrey Macnab, Independent

During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. As the seemingly unstoppable Nazi forces advance, and with the Allied army cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman). While maneuvering his political rivals, he must confront the ultimate choice: negotiate with Hitler and save the British people at a terrible cost or rally the nation and fight on against incredible odds.
